Our goal is to raise awareness of the impact that each of us have on the environment in hopes of creating a more sustainable future by focusing on the six categories below.
Waste Minimization Waste minimization is a set of processes and practices intended to reduce the amount of waste produced. By reducing or eliminating the generation of harmful and persistent wastes. By making announcements and tracking our progress through school wide waste audits we hope to see a change in the amount of food and garbage waste produced by the teachers and students at Nantyr Shores.
Energy Conservation Energy conservation is the effort made to reduce the consumption of energy by using less of an energy service. This can be achieved either by using energy more efficiently or by reducing the amount of service used. Energy use is a very big issue caused by this generation due to all the advancements in technology. Driving less, not using your phone and turning off lights when not in use are all easy ways to conserve energy.
School Ground Greening School ground greening tackles the physical environment of our school. This can be achieved by garbage clean up day, planting gardens, having natural areas of the yard where grass doesn't get cut and so much more. School ground greening is a very easy way to see the impact being made.
Environmental Stewardship Environmental stewardship refers to responsible use and protection of the natural environment through conservation and sustainable practices. The main benefits of environmental stewardship are conserving natural resources, combating pollution, and protecting biodiversity.
Curriculum Supporting student learning is one of the key successes of our program. By engaging students in hands-on environmental learning and action, conservation habits are brought home and into the community, and happen now and into the future. By integrating our environment into our curriculum we have a better learning platform.
Teamwork & Leadership Our ECOs program gives students a way to work together to achieve meaningful leadership roles in our school environment. We strive from collaboration and new ideas. This welcoming, team attitude allows for a successful and fun group of students. The goal is to also spark the leadership in others to influence the people around them to take on the same environmentally conscious habits.
